What makes the Residency Explorer tool different

The Residency Explorer tool is built using source-verified data provided directly by the AAMC and national organizations in the transition to residency.

That means:

  • No crowdsourced data
  • No guesswork or scraped information
  • Consistent, comparable data across programs

The Residency Explorer tool brings trusted data together in one place, so you don’t have to piece it together yourself.

Where the data comes from

The Residency Explorer tool combines data from organizations involved in the transition to residency, including:

  • AAMC (applicant and interview data)
  • AAMC and AMA (program and resident characteristics from the National GME Census Surveys, physician workforce data)
  • ACGME (program directory information, specialty descriptions)
  • NBME (USMLE Step exam data)
  • NBOME (COMLEX-USA level exam data)
  • NRMP (positions offered and filled)
  • AAFP and ABFM (Family medicine specific data)
  • ABMS (specialty descriptions)
  • BLS (specialty compensation)

  • Identify specialties and programs that may align with your interests
  • Understand how different programs compare
  • Use data to inform your application strategy

It works best alongside your own research and conversations with advisors or mentors.

How to think about the insights

The Residency Explorer tool provides data and insights based on the prior application cycles.

These insights are meant to:

  • Help you understand patterns across programs
  • Give context to your experiences and metrics
  • Support more informed decision-making

They should not be used as guarantees or exact outcomes.

Disclaimer: A note on data and research

The Residency Explorer tool uses the most recent data available from trusted organizations to help you explore specialties and programs. It does not tell you where to apply or predict where you may be invited to interview.

Because program details and selection processes can change, you should also review program websites and talk with a trusted advisor as you continue your research.

1 Applicant pool composition data are presented for residency programs who received at least 10 applicants to their program via the MyERAS application in the prior cycle. These data are presented for 75-100% of programs in 34 specialties, 50-74% of programs in 3 specialties, and less than 50% of programs for 4 specialties.

2 Interview invitation data are presented for residency programs who invited to interview at least 10 applicants via Thalamus in the prior cycle. Interview invitation data are presented for 75-100% of programs in 19 specialties, 50-74% of programs in 9 specialties, and less than 50% of programs in 10 specialties.

3 Number of positions offered and filled are presented for programs who participated in the NRMP Main Residency Match in the prior cycle. These data are presented for 80-100% of programs in 37 specialties, 50-79% of programs in 5 specialties, and less than 50% of programs in 3 specialties.

Residency ExplorerTM FAQs

Getting Started

  1. How do I access the Residency Explorer tool?
Anyone (students, advisors, program staff, etc.) can access the Residency Explorer tool using your AAMC account. If you don’t have one, you can create one for free.

  2. Can programs see my information?
No. Any information you enter into the Residency Explorer tool is private and is not shared with residency programs.

Using the Tool

  1. Can I download program data?
No. The Residency Explorer tool is designed for interactive use so that data is viewed with the appropriate context and interpretation. Please see the Residency Explorer tool Terms and Conditions for appropriate use of Residency Explorer tool data.

  2. What does “Program Alignment” mean?
Program Alignment shows how a program’s characteristics compare to what matters most to you. It helps you quickly identify programs that may align with your priorities.

Understanding the Data

  1. What do score ranges (USMLE or COMLEX-USA) represent?
The Middle 80% of Scores column shows the license exam score ranges of applicants invited to interview at the 10th and 90th percentile for that program in the prior cycle. They are not cutoffs and should not be used to determine whether you will or will not receive an interview.
Example: If the middle 80% of scores shows 220 – 260, that means 80% of applicants invited to interview at the program in the prior cycle had scores between 220 and 260.

  2. What is the difference between bar charts and pie charts?

    • Bar charts show interview rates within a group (for example, the percentage of applicants invited to interview of those who signaled)
    • Pie charts show how a group of interviewees or applicants is made up (for example, the breakdown of applicants invited to interview who sent a program signal vs who did not send a program signal)

Data Accuracy & Missing Information

  1. Where does the data come from?
Data comes directly from the AAMC and other national organizations in the transition to residency. It is source-verified data, not crowdsourced or scraped from third-party websites. Please see the tool’s data modal for more detailed information.

  2. Why is my program’s data missing or incorrect?
Programs update their data through official systems and are not able to directly edit their data within the tool. If something looks off, please contact support.

  3. How often is the data updated?
Data is updated periodically based on availability from organizations providing data. Application, interview, license exam, and Main Residency Match data are updated following each application cycle.

  4. Why do some programs not display applicant data?
Data may not be displayed for different reasons:

    1. Program did not participate in a service: Application data are available for programs that used ERAS. Interview invitation data are available for programs that used Thalamus. Positions offered and filled are available for programs that participated in the NRMP Main Residency Match.
    2. Protect privacy and confidentiality: Interview invitation data are displayed for programs that invited at least 10 applicants to interview via Thalamus. Current resident data are displayed for programs with at least 10 current residents. USMLE and COMLEX-USA score data are displayed for programs that invited to interview at least 30 applicants who submitted exam scores to the program.
    3. Display data only for programs that had access to it: If a program did not participate in program signaling or did not access geographic preferences data in the prior cycle, interview invitation data, including bar charts and pie charts, are not displayed because these data were not considered to determine interview invitations.
    4. Specialty or program is changing their approach in the future: If the program is in a specialty that changed their approach to signaling or geographic preferences for the upcoming cycle, data are not displayed because it may misrepresent how these data may be used to determine interview invitations in the next cycle. To view 2026 cycle program signaling data and geographic preferences for these specialties, please visit the ERAS Statistics webpage. For all programs, we encourage you to consult with the program's website for additional information on program characteristics, application requirements, and resident information.
  5. Why isn’t comparative data shown for applicants who’ve previously matched to a program shown?
The Residency Explorer tool uses historical data. Due to the recent changes in the MyERAS application, the tool only presents data from the single, most recent cycle (i.e., 2026 cycle) making sample sizes for the NRMP Main Residency Match data at the program level too small to display comparative data for most programs. As a result, Residency Explorer leadership decided not to display NRMP Main Residency Match data to ensure comparable data across programs were shown and to protect the privacy and confidentiality of matched applicants.
For all programs, we encourage you to consult with the program’s website for additional information on program characteristics, application requirements, and resident information.

  6. Why are only some application characteristics in the Residency Explorer tool and other application content (e.g., experiences, publications) not included?
Residency Explorer application characteristics were selected based on research that explored with medical students, medical school advisors, residents, and program directors which application characteristics are of greatest interest and importance to applicants and based on which application characteristics predict interview invitation. Additional application characteristics may be added to the Residency Explorer tool in the future.
